Stuffed Grape Leaves

Originating in the Ottoman period, these stuffed grape leaves in Turkish are called "yalanc" which means 'fake', in reference to the ones made with rice instead of meat; other ingredients may consist of pine nuts, shredded carrots, currants or raisins, and spices may include parsley, garlic, onion, and cinnamon, allspice or nutmeg. When serving, a garnish may be lemon wedges, dill and/or yogurt. Stuffed grape leaves are a healthy food, high in dietary fiber, iron and calcium and rich in vitamins A, B6 and C.
